Podcast insights and professional reflections
Podcast overview
In Season 4, Episode 2 of the Burnout to Brilliance podcast by Balanceology (formerly the Art of Balance Burnout Podcast), I’m joined by Laurence Davies for a conversation exploring the intersection between burnout and suicidal ideation, and why these experiences are too often treated as separate concerns.
We discuss how prolonged burnout can affect emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and sense of self, sometimes giving rise to thoughts such as wanting everything to stop or feeling like a burden. We explore why these experiences often go unnoticed, particularly in high-functioning professionals, and why silence can increase rather than reduce risk.
The episode also addresses common myths about suicide, the importance of asking direct but compassionate questions, and the role of burnout prevention as a protective factor.
Reflections after the conversation
What stayed with me most strongly after recording was how quietly burnout and suicidal thinking can coexist.
Burnout does not simply drain energy; it narrows perspective. When exhaustion becomes chronic, it can feel impossible to imagine change, support, or relief. This is why suicidal ideation is often misunderstood, it is frequently less about wanting to die, and more about wanting the pain or pressure to stop.
Another reflection was how much fear still exists around talking openly about suicide. Avoidance may feel safer, but it is often silence that leaves people most alone.
This conversation reinforced for me that burnout prevention is not optional or secondary work. It is foundational. When we take burnout seriously, relationally, systemically, and compassionately, we are protecting lives, not just wellbeing.
Finally, it reminded me that professional boundaries and humanity are not in opposition. Communities of care are built through noticing, asking, and staying present.
